This Sunday two Spanish soldiers have died in a BMR armoured vehicle. An outdated vehicle designed and built in the 70s for other wars. A vehicle that turns into shrapnel when it receives a blast.

While in the UK the battle of the Snatch has unleashed, here in Spain we are struggling to equip our Armed Forces with MRAP for over a year. Unfortunately the momentum of purchasing and commissioning of MRAPs for our troops languishing between our incompetence and a brutal budget cut for 2009. In one year we have only been able to deploy 17 MLV Lince. USA has deployed in one year and a half more than 10,000 to Iraq and Afghanistan getting thereby reduce its casualties in such attacks up by 80%.

The British Snatchs are called mobile coffins. Here we have our private Snatch: BMRs, VAMTAC, and Anibal. Al of them obsolete vehicles inadequate to protect our troops. Known fact that unfortunately has already spread among the Spanish troops to their distrust. Indeed it is well-known for our political and military leaders. Fact that some silent because discipline and others because of their moral misery. Well here we are not going to shut up:

Este domingo dos soldados españoles más han muerto en un BMR. Un vehículo obsoleto diseñado y construido en los 70 para otras guerras. Un vehículo que se convierte en pura metralla cuando recibe una explosión.

Mientras en el Reino Unido se ha desatado la batalla de los Snatch , aquí en España llevamos luchando por que se dote a nuestras FAS con MRAP desde hace más de un año. Desgraciadamente el impulso de adquisición y puesta en servicio de MRAPs para nuestras tropas languidece entre nuestra incompetencia y un recorte presupuestario brutal para 2009. En un año sólo hemos sido capaces de desplegar 17 MLV Lince. EEUU ha desplegado en 6 meses más (un año y medio) más de 10000 entre Irak y Afganistán consiguiendo con ello reducir sus bajas en este tipo de ataques hasta en un 80%.

A los Snatch británicos se les llama ataúdes móviles. Pues bien nosotros tenemos nuestros Snatch particulares: BMRs, VAMTAC, s y Aníbales. Vehículos obsoletos e inadecuados para proteger a nuestras tropas. Hecho conocido que desgraciadamente ya se ha extendido entre las tropas españolas para su desconfianza. Hecho que es ya de sobra conocido por nuestros políticos y la cúpula militar. Hecho que unos callan por disciplina y otros por miseria moral. Pues desde aquí no nos vamos a callar:

Light MLV MRAPs arriving. UAVs out of order.

Spain has begun the deployment of its Iveco MLV Lince light MRAP vehicles in Afghanistan. The final destiny of the first vehicles will be Qala I Naw, location of the Spanish PRT, afterwards will equip the QRF Coy in Herat. The vehicles are arriving just when the efforts to create and sustain a FOB (Forward Operations Base) in Bala Murghab, a district that has been abandoned last november, are increasing the insurgent attacks on the Regional Command-West (RC-W) troops.

The MLV (or LMV) Lince is used in Afganistan by several allied countries with an outsatnading result. This year, an italian MLV (in the pictures down) suffered a serious IED attack with no cassualties. Apart from Italy, Norway, the Czec Republic, Croatia, Belgium and the UK are operating them in the afghan theatre.

Unfortunately, at the same time, the entire Spanish PASI UAV unit has become inoperative because of the command and control system.

España ha comenzado el despliegue de los MRAP ligero MLV Lince en Afganistán. El destino final de los primeros vehículos es el PRT de Qala i Naw; posteriormente equiparán la Cia QRF de Herat. Los vehículos llegan justo cuando los esfuerzos de crear y mantener una Base Avanzada de Operaciones en Bala Murghab, un distrito que se abandonó el pasado noviembre, están incremetando los ataques insurgentes sobre las tropas del Mando Regional Oeste (RC-W).

El MLV (o LMV) Lince es usado en Afganistán por varios países aliados con un resultado sobresaliente. Este año, un MLV italiano sufrío un serio ataque con IED sin que se produjese ninguna baja. Además de Italia, Noruega, la República Checa, Croacia, Bélgica y el Reino Unido los operan en el teatro afgano.

Desafortunadamente, al mismo tiempo, toda la unidad UAV PASI ha quedado inoperativa por problemas de los sistemas de mando y control.

Spain orders MRAP RG-31 Mk5E.

General Dynamics Santa Bárbara Sistemas (GDSBS) has been awarded a EUR64.6 million (USD93.9 million) contract to supply 100 RG-31 Mk5E mine-protected vehicles to the Spanish Army. The contract, announced by the company on 3 September, calls for the delivery of 85 armoured personnel carriers, 10 ambulances and five command post variants, plus the integration of remote-controlled weapon station turrets and long-term integrated logistic support.

General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas, as prime contractor, will provide program management, engineering and logistic support. BAE Systems Land Systems OMC of South Africa will supply the vehicles as a subcontractor to General Dynamics. Work under the contract is expected to be completed by 2009. The contract includes an option for a second phase for 80 additional vehicles that will include some manufacturing in Spain.

The RG-31 Mk5E is a 4x4 armored vehicle with a combat mass of up to 17,000 kg, including 3,500 kg of payload. In standard Armored Personel Carrier configuration, this air-conditioned vehicle carries a crew of 10 (driver plus nine). It is in service with many other countries including the United States and Canada and has been operating in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The first vehicles will be deployed to Afghanistan and, afterwards, could equip the spanish troops in Lebanon.

NATO asks Spain to increase her contribution in Afghanistan.

According to El País, It seems that the request that Spain could attend is the deployment of more Operational Mentor and Liaison Teams (OMLT) to train the new Security Forces and the Afghan National Army (ANA).

Ten days ago, Spain increased her contingent with four recce and surveillance UAVs and their control teams (36 troops).

La OTAN pide que España aumente sus contribución en Afganistán.

Según el diario El País, en el caso concreto de España, la petición que tiene más visos de prosperar es el envío de nuevos equipos de instructores para poner en marcha las Fuerzas de Seguridad y el Nuevo Ejército Afgano (ANA).

España incrementó su contingente hace 10 días con 4 aviones no tripulados (UAV) para reconocimiento y vigilancia y sus respectivos equipos de control (36 hombres).

An spanish patrol attacked in Sang Atesh (Afghanistan).

A team from the Spanish PRT in Qala in Naw (Afghanistan) was today attacked in the vicinity of Sang Atesh. This locality is 60 km northwards Qala I Naw.

According to the Spanish Joint Staff’s preliminary report the attack has not produced any wounded; only the VAMTAC vehicles suffered damages. The team was supported by a platoon coming from Qala i Naw base and by an ISAF fighter that didn’t use its weapons.

Last November the Spanish PRT inaugurated the new bridge of this locality. This project cost 24500 $.

Some days ago El Alijar, an spanish defense blogger, warned about our attitude in Afganistan in “ISAF: Patrolling and chating, the unique way out.”:

“Being shut up indoors in our bases will not help that because money will not buy a secure environment in our name.”

Una patrulla española atacada en Sang Atesh (Afganistán).

En la mañana de hoy un equipo del PRT español perteneciente a la base de Qala i Naw ha sido atacado en las cercanías de la localidad de Sang Atesh. Esta localidad se encuentra a unos 60 kilómetros al norte de Qala i Naw.

De acuerdo con los datos del informe preliminar del Estado Mayor de la Defensa, el ataque no ha provocado daños personales y sólo daños materiales en uno de los vehículos VAMTAC utilizado por los militares españoles. El equipo recibió apoyo de manera inmediata por una sección motorizada de Qala i Naw y por un caza de ISAF que no llegó a utilizar su armamento.

El pasado noviembre el PRT español inauguró el puente en esta localidad en el que se invirtió 24.500 dólares.

Hace unos días El Alijar avisaba sobre nuestra actitud en Afganistán en “ISAF: patrullar y charlar, la única salida.”:

“Estar encerrados entre las cuatro paredes de nuestras bases no nos ayudará porque el dinero no comprará un ambiente seguro en nuestro nombre.”

Spain purchasing MRAP. España compra MRAP.

After acquiring 120 LMV (Light Multirol Vehicle) from the Italian firm IVECO, Spain announces the purchase of 100 RG 31 MK5 for reinforcing her operations in Afghanistan and Lebanon. Both vehicles will substitute the Anibal, the BMR and the Vamtac.

The Spanish RG 31 will be armed with a SAMSON Remote Control Weapon Station from Rafael.

The deployment of the first 40 LMV have begun this February and the destination selected is Afghanistan.

Después de la adquisición de 120 LMV a la empresa italiana IVECO, España anuncia la compra de 100 RG31 MK5 para reforzar sus misiones en Afganistán y El Líbano. Ambos modelos sustituir a los Anibal, los BMR y los Vamtac que hoy en día despliegan en estas misiones.

El RG31 español estará dotado de una torre de control remoto SAMSON de la firma israelita SAMSON.

El despliegue de los primeros 40 LMV ha empezado este mes de febrero hacia Afganistán.
