NATO asks Spain to increase her contribution in Afghanistan.

According to El País, It seems that the request that Spain could attend is the deployment of more Operational Mentor and Liaison Teams (OMLT) to train the new Security Forces and the Afghan National Army (ANA).

Ten days ago, Spain increased her contingent with four recce and surveillance UAVs and their control teams (36 troops).

Según el diario El País, en el caso concreto de España, la petición que tiene más visos de prosperar es el envío de nuevos equipos de instructores para poner en marcha las Fuerzas de Seguridad y el Nuevo Ejército Afgano (ANA).

España incrementó su contingente hace 10 días con 4 aviones no tripulados (UAV) para reconocimiento y vigilancia y sus respectivos equipos de control (36 hombres).

A team from the Spanish PRT in Qala in Naw (Afghanistan) was today attacked in the vicinity of Sang Atesh. This locality is 60 km northwards Qala I Naw.

According to the Spanish Joint Staff’s preliminary report the attack has not produced any wounded; only the VAMTAC vehicles suffered damages. The team was supported by a platoon coming from Qala i Naw base and by an ISAF fighter that didn’t use its weapons.

Last November the Spanish PRT inaugurated the new bridge of this locality. This project cost 24500 $.

Some days ago El Alijar, an spanish defense blogger, warned about our attitude in Afganistan in “ISAF: Patrolling and chating, the unique way out.”:

“Being shut up indoors in our bases will not help that because money will not buy a secure environment in our name.”

En la mañana de hoy un equipo del PRT español perteneciente a la base de Qala i Naw ha sido atacado en las cercanías de la localidad de Sang Atesh. Esta localidad se encuentra a unos 60 kilómetros al norte de Qala i Naw.

De acuerdo con los datos del informe preliminar del Estado Mayor de la Defensa, el ataque no ha provocado daños personales y sólo daños materiales en uno de los vehículos VAMTAC utilizado por los militares españoles. El equipo recibió apoyo de manera inmediata por una sección motorizada de Qala i Naw y por un caza de ISAF que no llegó a utilizar su armamento.

El pasado noviembre el PRT español inauguró el puente en esta localidad en el que se invirtió 24.500 dólares.

Hace unos días El Alijar avisaba sobre nuestra actitud en Afganistán en “ISAF: patrullar y charlar, la única salida.”:

“Estar encerrados entre las cuatro paredes de nuestras bases no nos ayudará porque el dinero no comprará un ambiente seguro en nuestro nombre.”

A 400M structure static tests started in Madrid.

The static tests of a dedicated A 400M complete structure has begun at the Military Transport Aircraft Division (MTAD) facilities in Getafe, Madrid. The aim of this testing process is to demonstrate the reliability and integrity of the aircraft structure.

The A400M is designed for the transportation of all types of heavy military or civil loads such as vehicles, containers or pallets, as well as troops. It is a high-speed four turboprop engine aircraft specifically designed to meet the needs of European NATO nations and which equally fulfils the requirements of other air forces around the world. Currently, orders for the A400M stand at 192 firm commitments, including the seven European NATO launch customer nations Germany, France, Spain, UK, Turkey, Belgium and Luxembourg as well as South Africa and Malaysia.

Comienzan los test de estructura del A 400M en Madrid

Han comenzado los ensayos estáticos sobre la estructura completa del A 400M en las instalaciones que para tal efecto tiene la División de Aviones de Transporte Militar (MTAD) en Getafe, Madrid. El objetivo de estos ensayos es demostrar la fiabilidad y seguridad de la estructura del avión.

El A400M está diseñado para el transporte de todo tipo de cargas pesadas civiles o militares desde vehículos, contenedores y paletas, hasta tropas. Es un avión propulsado por cuatro potentes turbopropulsores diseñado para cumplir con las necesidaes de las naciones OTAN y que además ha completado los requerimientos de otras fuerzas aéreas en el mundo. En la actualidad, hay 192 unidades encargadas por las siete naciones OTAN iniciadoras del proyecto: Francia, Alemania, España Reino Unido, Turquía, Bélgica y Luxemburgo, a las que se han unido Sudáfrica y Malasia.

The new Spanish Navy´s strategic projection ship Juan Carlos I launched at Ferrol.

This evening the Juan Carlos I has been launched at Ferrol shipyard. H.M. Queen Sofia of Spain has been its godmother.

In the naval scope, the strategic projection means the real capacity to take the naval action and its influence on earth to the chosen coastal scene, to be able to act in him with freedom of action and during the necessary time, and to cooperate to the projection and support of specific means of other Armies, specially the land forces.

In addition to that main mission, the ship could be used like complementary platform of the aircraft carrier Prince of Asturias.

El nuevo buque español de proyección estratégica Juan Carlos I botado en el Ferrol.

Esta tarde ha sido botado en los astilleros del Farol el Juan Carlos I. SM La Reina Sofía de España ha sido su madrina.

En el ámbito naval la proyección estratégica implica tener capacidad de llevar la acción naval, y su influencia sobre tierra, a las costas elegidas, ser capaz de operar en ellas con libertad de acción y durante el tiempo necesario, y cooperar en la proyección y apoyo de los medios específicos de otros ejércitos, especialmente las fuerzas terrestres.

Además de esa misión principal, el buque podrá ser utilizado como plataforma complementaria del portaaviones Príncipe de Asturias

SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND MEMBERS RESCUE A BRITISH WOMAN IN ALICANTE (SPAIN).

Last wendsday, a Special Operations Command unit, based in Alicante, participated in the search and rescue labours for an English woman who had got lost while on an excursion with a senior citizen group at the site known as ”Palomaret”, in the Agost, Alicante municipal district. The Special Operations Command members, who were undertaking an instruction exercise in the area, began a systematic search that started at the site where the missing woman had last been seen. The search bore fruit hours later, and the Special Operation Command forces found the missing person in a steep ravine, after having fallen from a height of some ten metres. Facing the apparently serious situation –the woman had fractured both arms-, immediate first aid was carried out in order to proceed to her stabilisation and the 112 emergency services along with the Civil Guard were informed of the situation. Subsequently, the injured woman was evacuated by a 112 emergency service helicopter to hospital

MIEMBROS DEL MANDO DE OPERACIONES ESPECIALES RESCATAN A UNA MUJER BRITÁNICA EN ALICANTE.

El miércoles pasado, una unidad del mando de Operaciones Especiales (MOE), con sede en Alicante, participó en las labores de búsqueda y rescate de una mujer inglesa que se había perdido mientras realizaba una excursión con un grupo de la tercera edad en el paraje conocido como ”Palomaret”, en el término municipal de la localidad alicantina de Agost. Los componentes del MOE, que se encontraban realizando un ejercicio de instrucción por la zona, iniciaron una búsqueda sistemática que se inició en el lugar donde la mujer desaparecida había sido vista por última vez. Las tareas de búsqueda dieron sus frutos horas después, y los efectivos del MOE encontraron a la persona buscada en un barranco abrupto, tras haber caído por un cortado de unos diez metros de altitud. Ante la aparente gravedad de la situación –la mujer tenía fracturados los dos brazos-, se efectuó una primera asistencia inmediata para proceder a su estabilización y se procedió a informar de la situación a los servicios de emergencia (112) y a la Guardia Civil. Posteriormente, la herida fue evacuada en un helicóptero del 112 al hospital.

The Juan Sebastián Elcano is the school ship of the Spanish Navy. It was built on March 5, 1927, 81 years ago, in Cadiz (Spain). Her plans were also used twenty-five years later to construct her Chilean sail training vessel sister ship Esmeralda .

The ship carries the spanish navigator Elcano´s coat of arms, which was granted to the family by Emperor Charles V. The coat of arms is a terraqueous globe with the motto "Primus Circumdedisti Me" (meaning: "First to circumnavigate me").

Juán sebastían ELCANO, born in Guetaria (former Kigdom of Castile), was the first naval commander on completing the world circumnavigation in History aboard the Victoria on September 6, 1522. The expedition was initially commanded by Magallanes but he died in the Philippine Islands without finishing the voyage.

El Juan Sebastián Elcano es el buque escuela de la Armada española. Fue construido un 5 de marzo de 1927, hace 81 años, en Cadiz (España). Sus planos fueron utilizados 25 años después para construir su gemelo el Esmeralda, buque escuela de la Armada chilena.

El barco porta el escudo de armas del navegante español Juan Sebastian Elcano, al cual le fue concedido por el Emperador Carlos V. El escudo es un globo terraqueo con el lema “Primus Circumdedisti Me"(“El primero que me circunnavegaste”).

Juán Sebastián Elcano, nacido en Guetaria (en el antiguo Reino de Castilla), fue el primer comandante naval en completar la vuelta al mundo a bordo de la nao Victoria el 6 de septiembre de 1522. La expedición fue iniiclemente mandada por Magallanes, pero éste murió en las Islas Filipinas sin poder acabar el viaje.

Romeo-Mike counterterrorist operation on going.

Tonight at 2400 the counterterrorist alert level 3 will be activated because of the proximity of the 9M elections. This level is the highest of the Counterterrorist National Plan in Spain and implies the participation of the Armed Forces in the executive phase. The objectives to protect by the Armed Forces will be critical infrastructure and high speed railways (AVE). The operation is called Romeo Mike and has been activated several times during the last years.

Hoy domingo a las 2400 h se activará el nivel 3 de alerta antiterrorista ante la proximidad de las elecciones del 9M. Este nivel es el más alto de los recogidos en el Plan de Prevención y Protección Antiterrorista en España e implica la participación de las FAS en la fase operativa.

Los objetivos a proteger serán infraestructuras críticas y líneas de alta velocidad (AVE). La operación se denomina Romeo Mike y ha sido activada con anterioridad en varias ocasiones.

A new helicopter engine maintenance centre in Albacete.

ITP Group (Industria de Turbo Propulsores SA) has signed an agreement with Castilla-La Mancha regional authorities for the creation of a helicopter engine maintenance centre in the Albacete Aeronautics Park. This centre is expected to begin its activity towards the end of this year. The new centre in Albacete will mean an initial investment of €15 millions.

The new centre’s project is based in the future maintenance needs of the programmes for the NH90 and EC 135 helicopters. The agreement has been possible because the commitment made by General Electric with the Spanish Government for the maintenance of an initial figure of over 45 engines. This means that there already exists a sufficient workload to ensure the viability of the new activity centre. Apart from this, as the only authorised independent centre in the world, ITP carries out maintenance work on the PW206 engines which equip the 48 EC135s due to be acquired by the Ministry of the Interior and which could also equip the new EC135s acquired by the Ministry of Defence.

ITP has recently maintained 270 M250 engines for the US Army’s Kiowa helicopters. Moreover, ITP is also responsible for the redesign of the upgraded version of the engine for the Eurocopter HAD Tiger helicopter, the MTR390 E, with which FAMET will be equipped. Support activities for this engine will also be carried out by ITP once it goes into service.

Un nuevo centro de mantenimiento de motores de helicóptero en Albacete.

El Grupo ITP ha firmado un acuerdo con las autoridades regionales de Castilla-La Mancha para la creación de un centro de mantenimiento de helicópteros en el Parque Aeronáutico de Albacete. El nuevo centro supondrá una inversión inicial de 15 millones de euros.

El proyecto del nuevo centro se basa en las futuras necesidades derivadas del mantenimiento de los helicópteros NH90 y EC135. El acuerdo ha sido posible gracias al compromiso entre General Electric y el Gobierno de España para el mantenimiento de los 45 motores de los NH90 españoles. Además, ITP lleva el mantenimiento de los motores PW206 de los EC135 adquiridos por el Ministerio del Interior y que podrían equipar también a los adquiridos por el Ministerio de Defensa.

ITP ha concluido recientemente el mantenimiento de 270 motores M250 procedentes de los helicópteros Kiowa del US Army. Además, ITP es también responsable del rediseño hecho en los motores MTR390 de la versión mejorada HAD del Tigre con el que se dotarán las FAMET. El mantenimiento de este motor también será realizado por ITP, una vez que entre en servicio.

General Atomics & SENER promote Predator UAS in Spain.

Acording to Defense Update, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is teaming with SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas, S.A., a Spanish engineering company, to promote GA-ASI's Predator Unmanned Aerial Systems in Spain.

SENER has said "that the company's expertise in delivering ISR systems to the Spanish Defense and Security Forces through the adaptation and integration of platforms and sensors and its capability to provide in-country operational and logistical support will contribute to the team's offering."

Spain has now several UAV-UAS programs on going.

Según Defense Update, la empresa General Atomics Inc. se ha aliado con la española de ingeniería SENER para promocionar el UAS Predator en el mercado español.

SENER ha afirmado que la experiencia de la compañía en la provisión de sistemas ISR (inteligencia, vigilancia y reconocimiento) a las FAS y a las FCSE, y su capacidad de apoyo logístico y operativo, contribuirán a la promoción de esta alianza comercial.

España tiene en la ctualidad varios programas de adquisición de UAV-UAS en marcha.

Spanish defence market forecasts by BMI company.

Last report done by Business Monitor International about the Spanish defence market predicts a solid outlook for the Spanish defence industry and a stable internal and security outlook.

Three key ideas:

-Spanish security forces continue to focus their attention toward international threats. There are currently no major conventional military threats to the country, but the threat from international and domestic terrorism remains very real.

-The ongoing modernisation process at the heart of the armed forces, combined with an increase in Spain’s involvement in peacekeeping operations, has justified an overall increase in the defence budget. Also, in the light of the Madrid bombings and the pressing need to boost counter-terrorism operations, the new administration has opted for a 17.1% increase in the Security Services’ budget.

-Total expenditure is forecast to increase steadily from EUR9.03bn in 2005 to reach EUR10.15bn by 2010. The defence industry will benefit from planned increases in government expenditure. Restructuring and consolidation in the Spanish and European defence industry, and the state’s continued relinquishment of its hold on the industry, has allowed Spanish firms to increasingly integrate into pan-European and transatlantic markets, and gain greater access to international markets. As a result, arms exports are expected to rise in the near future, and imports are also likely to benefit from the government’s modernisation plans.

PASI system

Spain will deploy several medium sized UAV in Afghanistan before next spring. The system is called PASI (Intelligence sensorized autonomous platform) and is based on the Israeli Searcher MK II-J model. This system has a 300 km range and autonomy of 12 hours. It can operate during day or night. Spain announced recently the purchase of 27 shorter range UAV “Raven 11 B” to complete the Searcher’s capabilities.

Moreover, last July Spain joined the franco-german project to develop a large, advanced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance missions. Spanish representatives signed a technical arrangement agreement on 18 July, in the risk-reduction phase. Apart from the French, German and Spanish parts of EADS, Indra of Spain and Thales of France were also parties to the agreement.

That agreement was the first step towards the European ISTAR UAV program, which is open to other European partners. It will provide a vital capability by the middle of the next decade.

Future European (France, Germany and Spain) advanced UAV

España desplegará antes de primavera varios UAVs de tipo medio en Afganistán. El sistema se llama PASI (Sistema de Plataforma Autónoma Sensorizada de Inteligencia) y el modelo elegido es el israelita Searcher MK II-J, que incorpora una de las tecnologías más avanzadas en este tipo de materiales, con un alcance de 300 kilómetros y 12 horas de autonomía de vuelo. Este sistema está basado en plataformas aéreas con posibilidad de empleo de día y de noche. Además España anunció recientemente la adquisición de nueve sistemas Mini UAV "Raven 11 B" (27 vehículos). Estos sistemas tienen un menor alcance y serán utilizados para completar la labor de los "Searcher".

Además, en julio pasado, España se unió al proyecto para desarrollar un gran UAV avanzado para misiones ISTAR. Los representantes españoles firmaron el acuerdo durante la fase de reducción de riesgo . Además de las empresas de EADS de Francia, España y Alemania, la española INDRA y la francesa THALES son también parte del acuerdo.

Este acuerdo supone el primer paso hacia el programa UAV ISTAR europeo, el cual está abierto a otros socios de la UE. Está prevista su entrada en servicio a mediados de la siguiente década.

Spain will acquire a SAR technology satellite. España desarrollará un satélite de tecnología SAR.

According to Infodefensa, a Spanish corporation will construct a civil-military purpose radar observation satellite for Spain. The project will cost €237,8 million and will be develop by HISDESAT Strategic Services. HISDESAT is participated by Hispasat (43 %),Insa (30 %), EADS (15 %), Indra (7%) and Sener (5%). This SAR technology (Synthetic Aperture Radar) system will complete the satellite observation capabilities of Spain with an all weather-night vision system.

Según Infodefensa, el Gobierno español ha aprobado la concesión de 237,6 millones de euros para la empresa HISDESAT para el desarrollo de un satélite por radar de observación de la Tierra y que tendrá tanto uso civil como militar. La sociedad HISDESAT Servicios Estratégicos, S.A., participada por Hispasat (43 %),Insa (30 %), EADS (15 %), Indra (7%) y Sener (5%), desarrollará e implantará un sistema de Observación de la Tierra con tecnología SAR (radares apertura sintética) y pondrá a disposición del Ministerio de Defensa. Este sistema completará las capacidades satélite de España, que por el momento no dispone de capacidad de observación de noche o con tiempo meteorológico adverso.

Spain purchasing MRAP. España compra MRAP.

After acquiring 120 LMV (Light Multirol Vehicle) from the Italian firm IVECO, Spain announces the purchase of 100 RG 31 MK5 for reinforcing her operations in Afghanistan and Lebanon. Both vehicles will substitute the Anibal, the BMR and the Vamtac.

The Spanish RG 31 will be armed with a SAMSON Remote Control Weapon Station from Rafael.

The deployment of the first 40 LMV have begun this February and the destination selected is Afghanistan.

Después de la adquisición de 120 LMV a la empresa italiana IVECO, España anuncia la compra de 100 RG31 MK5 para reforzar sus misiones en Afganistán y El Líbano. Ambos modelos sustituir a los Anibal, los BMR y los Vamtac que hoy en día despliegan en estas misiones.

El RG31 español estará dotado de una torre de control remoto SAMSON de la firma israelita SAMSON.

El despliegue de los primeros 40 LMV ha empezado este mes de febrero hacia Afganistán.
